The IAC Peter Coles International AV Competition

Just a reminder that 'The IAC Peter Coles International AV Competition' is being held on Saturday 10th March 2012 and Sunday 11th March 2012 at the Capel Curig Community Centre, Capel Curig, Snowdonia

We will be starting the competition on Saturday as usual at 2.00pm. We are arranging a meal (optional) at the Tyn-y-Coed Hotel for early evening then holding another shortish session in the evening. Sunday 11th March sessions will begin at 10.00am & 2.00pm. We hope to finish around 5.00pm - 6.00pm.

Cost is £7.50 for each day. We would love to see you for the weekend but you are welcome to come for just one of the days. Booking is essential through me mewaine@chasingthelight.co.uk.

We have had a good entry of approx 60 sequences and it would be great if you could join us!

What are natural Fractals?
A cauliflower is one simple example from everyday life. You can see in the picture that each floret of the cauliflower is like a miniature of the whole cauliflower. Also each floret is composed of tiny sub-florets, and this pattern continues on at least another level below that.

Jonathan Worth is Associate Senior Lecturer in photography within the School of Art & Design at Coventry University and "Photography and Narrative" is a free undergraduate photography class that he is starting on 13th October

I plan to open this class out freely, to the broader community of NewPhotographics, hence this post. There'll be no formal qualifications for anyone posting in via twitter, but neither is there pressure for the online student to do the whole class - drop in, drop out as you wish, the virtual door is open .... and the kettle is usually on.

North Wales Shire Horse Society

Philip Jones Griffiths

An exhibition of work by a world-renowned photographer is to go on display in Rhuddlan where he was born.

Philip Jones Griffiths, who died of cancer in 2008, was best known for his war images in Vietnam - where his ashes are being scattered this week.

The Recollections exhibition will be on display at Rhuddlan Library until 8 May.

Lost Camera

As well as being amusing, this is a very good idea indeed.

Adding a set of instructions in picture format to keep on your camera in case it gets lost seems such a good idea, its a wonder that nobody seems to have thought of it before.

Just take a set of photos that you never delete so that "when someone finds your camera at the bottom of the gorilla pit they are able to locate you and return the lost property to its rightful owner."

Incredible light graffiti

Many thanks to club member Ann Keyse for the link (below) to this article in The Mail Online which tells more about these fantastic photographs.

The name light graffiti struggles to do these displays justice.

The fantastic spectacles of colour - which are the latest trend in street art - are as impressive as fireworks.

A host of light sources, from flash lights and bike lights to blinking LED lights, are used to 'paint' a picture straight onto the camera lens.

Also known as light drawing or light painting, these arresting images are created with long exposure cameras in the dark. Sometimes the exposures run on for longer than an hour.

Following a series of high profile detentions under s44 of the terrorism act including 7 armed police detaining an award winning architectural photographer in the City of London, the arrest of a press photographer covering campaigning santas at City Airport and the stop and search of a BBC photographer at St Pauls Cathedral and many others. PHNAT feels now is the time for a mass turnout of Photographers, professional and amateur to defend our rights and stop the abuse of the terror laws.

St David's Church - The Tin Church

The Tin Church - St David's, Pensarn

St David's Church on South Parade, Pensarn was built just over 125 years ago as a temporary measure. It is scheduled for demolition in early 2010 and Abergele Camera Club have been invited to photograph the old tin church before the demolition. We have also been asked if we would keep a pictorial record of the demolition and construction of the new church on the same site.

The last service is being held on 3rd January and after the service there will be a small parade, a form of 'marching out' of the old church.

The church was built around 1886 as a temporary measure for the English community. At that time, Pensarn was a premier seaside resort and many families came for their holidays from the Manchester area as well as from the wealthier industrial areas of North Wales.

Arrangements have been made for the church to be opened at 10.00am next Saturday 19th December 2009 to facillitate photographing the church interior. I have not seen the inside of this church, but I am informed that it is completely wood-lined and quite beautiful.

This will prove to be an interesting project for the Club, as well as an important documentary record of the old and new St David churches in Pensarn for future generations. I'm certain that when this 'temporary' church was built 125 years ago, that none of the builders would ever have dreamed that it would still be standing this far into the future.

Ness Gardens on the Wirral

For one week only - Saturday 5th December to Sunday 13th December 2009, 5.30pm to 9.30pm - Ness gardens on the Wirral is putting on a display of lights as part of the celebrations for Liverpool's Year of the Environment.

THE lights were turned on at Wirral’s Ness Gardens last night as part of a special light show celebrating Liverpool’s Year of the Environment.

Solar-powered lights, bio-fuel generators and illuminated displays were officially turned on to light up the 64-acre award- winning gardens.

The IllimiNESS displays, which run until Sunday, December 13, also use audio and visual to project images from over 100 years of archive material of the gardens.

A three-metre high water curtain and dancing fountain are among the other highlights.

Kevin Reid, director of Ness Gardens, said: ”IllumiNESS promises to be a spectacular finale for the Year of the Environment celebrations and offers something for everyone to enjoy from stunning light displays, a luxury Christmas market and seasonal refreshments.”

Visitors can also stock up at the Christmas market offering the best of Cheshire and Wirral produce, as well as seasonal refreshments.

IllumiNESS is one of the flagship projects celebrating Liverpool’s Year of Environment aimed at making Liverpool green and sustainable and celebrating the global environment.

It runs from 5.30-9.30pm every night from Saturday, December 5 - Sunday, December 13.

TICKETS are only available in advance via the hotline on 0845 241 7868.

Tickets cost £12/£10/ £8, with a family ticket £38. Under-threes go free.

Beaumaris & Menai Bridge Photo Exhibition

The Beaumaris & Menai Bridge Camera Club are putting on an exhibition of their members' work at the Beaumaris Leisure Centre from 15th November 2009 until 4th January 2010.

The exhibition at the Leisure Centre will be open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10am - 12.30pm and all other days from 10am - 5pm.

The opening day was attended by members of the Conwy Camera Club who gave a glowing report on the standard of the photography and the exhibition in general. It is recommended that a visit be made to see the exhibition and incorporate it with the many photogenic landscapes on the Isle of Anglesey. Why not make it a family day out?

Site Update

Having spent quite some time working on a new format, the website is just about ready to update.

There are still a couple more things to fix, but we hope the new site will be going ahead very shortly.

Same as the old

The site will look very much like it did before with just some minor cosmetic changes. The underlying code, however, is much improved and visitors using old browsers should see a nice looking web site.

The Digital Camera Photographer of the Year competition this year received over 100,000 entries all vying for the £10,000 prize.

Split into 10 categories including People and Portraits, This is Britain, Man-made and more, judging the competition this year proved exceptionally difficult.
